PRODUCT BACKGROUND

Background

Cognex is a leading provider of vision systems, software, sensors, and industrial barcode readers used in manufacturing automation. Cognex is a global company and throughout this project I collaborated with teams across America, Hungary, and Germany.

One of Cognex's oldest and most widely used software products is called "DataMan Setup Tool". DataMan Setup Tool is used to configure barcode reading software that is then shared with the Cognex vision systems set up on a factory line.

Goal

The goal of DataMan Web UI was to create the next generation version of Setup Tool that was easier to use, more performant, and web-based.

Problem Space

During the planning phase of the project it was important to identify areas of difficulty to be mindful of as we progressed. Defining the problem space ahead of time helped to manage expectations and mitigate risks.

Areas for Improvement

  • What do current & experienced Setup Tool users struggle with?

  • What would new customers struggle with?

  • What areas could benefit from new technology?

Constraints

  • How much can we change the workflow and features, while sharing the same backend as Setup Tool?

  • What are the limitations and risks of using new technology?

WORKFLOW & HEIRARCHY

After working with Product Management to develop the product requirements, I iterated through several workflows with key stakeholders and we decided on the following. For this product, since we were working with the original backend, it was important to understand how each feature related to the overall heirarchy of controls (ie. device level, program level, or read setup level)
